High priests and shamans consumed these mushrooms to communicate with deities or seek divine guidance during important communal events. The Spanish conquistadors attempted to suppress these indigenous practices in the 16th century due to religious persecution; however, the traditions persisted covertly among native groups.

 

 

The Mazatec people have preserved their mushroom rituals through generations. For them, psilocybin mushrooms are integral for spiritual healing and divination. Under the guidance of a shaman, or curandera/o, participants embark on journeys facilitated by these mushrooms to gain insight into personal issues or connect with ancestral spirits. María Sabina, a renowned Mazatec curandera from Huautla de Jiménez, shared her knowledge of magic mushroom ceremonies with Westerners in the mid-20th century, catalyzing a global interest in psychedelic experiences.

 

 

Moving southward to South America, indigenous tribes such as those in the Amazon basin also recognized hallucinogenic plants' power long before European contact. While ayahuasca is perhaps more well-known in this region today, it's believed that various psychoactive florae were utilized by tribes for similar purposes—connecting with nature's spirit or facilitating shamanic journeys.

 

 

In Africa's Bwiti religion practiced by the Fang people in Gabon and Cameroon, iboga—a different kind of psychedelic plant—is more commonly used than psilocybin mushrooms; however, it shares similar ceremonial roles as an initiatory tool for spiritual enlightenment.
